Justice Minister Closes UNTMIS - Joint Justice and Corrections Workshop, Highlights National Ownership

Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Moallim Mohamud today attended the UNTMIS Joint Justice and Corrections Service Closure Workshop, held under the theme “Reflection on Achievements, Lessons Learned and Way Forward in Somalia’s Justice and Corrections Sectors.”

The workshop brought together officials from the Federal Government and Federal Member States, representatives of the United Nations and UNTMIS, justice and corrections institutions, and national and international partners supporting Somalia.

Minister Hassan thanked the United Nations, UNTMIS and other partners for their support in strengthening Somalia’s justice institutions and correctional services, building institutional capacity and advancing the rule of law.

He described the conclusion of UNTMIS activities as an important milestone that further strengthens the Federal Government’s national responsibility for the justice sector. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continuing the development of Somalia’s justice system and national institutions.

The Minister stressed that the knowledge, experience and institutional capacity developed during UNTMIS’s engagement in Somalia will provide a foundation for further advancing the country’s justice system and building on the progress already achieved.

Speaking at the workshop, Commissioner of the National Independent Human Rights Commission Farhan Jimale called for stronger national ownership, independent oversight and institutional cooperation as Somalia enters a new phase in justice and corrections.

Commissioner Farhan emphasized that justice and corrections are fundamentally human rights matters, stressing that people deprived of their liberty retain their dignity and fundamental rights. He also acknowledged the contribution of the United Nations and national and international partners to the development of Somalia’s justice and corrections institutions.

The workshop marked the conclusion of 13 years of UN rule-of-law support through UNSOM and UNTMIS, with national stakeholders highlighting the need to sustain the gains made and strengthen national leadership of the justice and corrections sectors.
