Baidoa, Southwest State of Somalia – In a significant step towards addressing the challenges of state-building, political dialogue, climate change, and the devastating impact of drought, the President of the Southwest State of Somalia, H.E Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed (Laftagareen), met with the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, Catriona Laing, in Baidoa, the administrative capital of Southwest State.

The meeting between President Laftagareen and Special Representative Laing marked a crucial opportunity for both parties to engage in a comprehensive discussion about the pressing issues plaguing the region. Southwest State has been grappling with severe drought for the past year, leading to widespread devastation and crippling many parts of the state.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the United Nations, alongside other humanitarian agencies, has been at the forefront of efforts to provide much-needed relief and assistance to the affected communities. Through intervention programs and coordinated initiatives, these organizations have been working tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of the population in Southwest State.

During the meeting, President Laftagareen and Special Representative Laing deliberated extensively on various aspects related to state-building. They underscored the importance of fostering political dialogue as a means to achieve stability, unity, and progress in the region. By engaging in constructive conversations and inclusive decision-making processes, Southwest State aims to lay a solid foundation for sustainable development and effective governance.

The discussion also focused on the critical issue of climate change, which has intensified the severity of droughts in the region. Both parties acknowledged the urgent need for enhanced measures to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and to build resilience among vulnerable communities. Collaboration between Southwest State and the United Nations will be crucial in developing long-term strategies to combat climate change and its consequences.

President Laftagareen expressed his gratitude to the United Nations and other humanitarian agencies for their tireless efforts in supporting the people of Southwest State during these challenging times. He emphasized the significance of sustained international support and collaboration in addressing the multifaceted challenges facing the region.

Special Representative Laing praised the resilience and determination of the people of Southwest State in the face of adversity and pledged the United Nations’ continued commitment to supporting the state’s recovery and development. She affirmed that the United Nations would work closely with Southwest State authorities and international partners to implement comprehensive interventions, ranging from emergency relief to long-term development plans.

As the meeting concluded, President Laftagareen and Special Representative Laing expressed their shared commitment to advancing state-building, fostering political dialogue, combating climate change, and mitigating the impact of drought in Southwest State. Through their collaboration and the collective efforts of the international community, it is hoped that Southwest State will overcome its challenges and embark on a path of sustainable development and prosperity.

In the coming months, it is expected that further initiatives and projects will be undertaken to alleviate the suffering caused by drought, enhance the resilience of communities, and promote stability and progress in Southwest State.
