Baku, Azerbaijan (SONNA): Commissioner Mohamud Moallim and Minister of Environment and Climate Change Khadija Makhzumi are leading Somalia’s delegation at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. The conference, which runs from November 11 to 22, 2024, brings together nearly 200 countries to discuss climate finance, fossil fuel transition, and strategies to mitigate climate change.

Somalia faces significant challenges due to climate shocks, including recurring droughts and floods. These climate-related disasters have severely impacted livelihoods, exacerbated displacement, and increased inequality and insecurity. The delegation aims to secure international support and funding to develop climate change adaptation strategies and build resilience in Somalia.

During the summit, Commissioner Moallim will engage in sideline meetings with relevant stakeholders and representatives to discuss these pressing issues. Minister Makhzumi, who participated in the opening of the conference, is leading a large delegation that includes the Somali Ambassador to Turkey and Azerbaijan, the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Agency Mohamud Macallin Abdulle, and other important members.

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Somalia expressed optimism about the conference, highlighting the importance of international cooperation and securing crucial climate funding to address the country’s challenges. The delegation hopes to take advantage of the opportunities at COP29 to gain international support for its plans to tackle climate change and present its efforts to address the climate challenges affecting the country.

COP29 is a critical moment for Somalia as it seeks to enhance its climate adaptation and resilience-building efforts. The conference will focus on securing a new goal on climate finance, ensuring every country has the means to take stronger climate action, and slashing greenhouse gas emissions. Somalia’s participation in COP29 underscores the country’s commitment to addressing the climate crisis and building a more resilient future.

As the world grapples with the impacts of climate change, Somalia’s efforts at COP29 serve as a reminder of the urgent need for global cooperation and support to tackle this pressing issue. The conference provides a platform for Somalia to share its experiences and learn from other countries, ultimately working towards a more sustainable and resilient future for all.
