Mogadishu (SONNA) – The Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre has commended the European Union and its member states for their continued support to Somalia, describing the bloc as a key partner during some of the country’s most difficult periods.
Speaking at an event marking Europe Day, the Prime Minister said the EU had stood by Somalia through humanitarian assistance, state-building efforts, institutional development, security support, and economic reforms, all of which contributed significantly to the country’s progress.
Prime Minister Hamza noted that Somalia is making tangible progress as the government intensifies efforts to rebuild state institutions, strengthen security, advance economic development, expand social services, and accelerate an inclusive democratic process.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing one-person, one-vote elections, enabling Somali citizens to directly elect their leaders, while emphasizing the importance of dialogue and consensus to reinforce national unity and security.
The Prime Minister also called on all political stakeholders to actively participate in the national consultations initiated by the government, stressing the need to safeguard national interests and preserve Somali unity.
“At this critical stage of nation-building, our country needs constructive dialogue and cooperation, not political confusion; lasting solutions, not endless disputes; unity and a cohesive nation, not division among the Somali people,” Prime Minister Hamza said.
