Washington, D.C. (SONNA) – Somalia’s Finance Minister, Bihi Imaan Ige, held separate high-level meetings with representatives from Norway, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Germany on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C. The discussions focused on strengthening economic cooperation, supporting Somalia’s reforms, and advancing development initiatives under the National Transformation Plan (NTP).

Minister Ige met with Norway’s Minister for International Development, Åsmund Aukrust, to discuss ongoing support for Somalia’s economic recovery. Norway has been a key partner in Somalia’s debt relief process and continues to assist in building resilience against climate-related shocks. The two officials explored ways to enhance Somalia’s productivity and expand development programs. “We deeply appreciate Norway’s unwavering commitment to Somalia’s progress,” said Minister Ige.

In talks with senior officials from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), the focus was on economic reforms, institutional capacity building, and job creation. The UK reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s reform agenda, with both sides agreeing to deepen collaboration in governance and private sector growth. The meeting highlighted the strong historical ties between the two nations and their shared vision for a stable and prosperous Somalia.

Minister Ige also held discussions with Danish representatives from the International Development Policy Office, where they explored opportunities to strengthen Somalia’s financial systems and invest in key economic sectors. Denmark expressed interest in supporting Somalia’s efforts to improve economic governance and unlock its untapped resources, which are vital for long-term growth.

The Somali delegation met with Birgid Pickel, Director General for Africa at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, to review progress under the National Transformation Plan. Germany, a long-standing partner, pledged continued support for Somalia’s development priorities, including infrastructure and economic stability. Minister Ige thanked Germany for its consistent partnership and emphasized Somalia’s commitment to reform.

These meetings underscore Somalia’s determination to secure international support for its economic recovery and debt relief efforts. With key partners reaffirming their commitment, Somalia is poised to advance its reform agenda and attract sustainable investments.

“Somalia is open for business, and we are grateful for the global community’s trust in our vision,” said Minister Ige.
