Mogadishu, Somalia (SONNA) – The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) convened a high-level forum today to review and enhance humanitarian cooperation in the country. The meeting centered on accelerating aid delivery, improving coordination between governmental and international bodies, and strengthening collaboration among local and international aid actors.
The significant gathering saw participation from a wide range of stakeholders, including the Deputy Minister of Finance of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mr. Abdiqafaar Elmi Hange; the Deputy Governor of Finance for the Banadir region, Mr. Isse Gure; high-ranking officials from the Federal Government; representatives from the United Nations; local and international non-governmental organizations; Somali business leaders; religious scholars; and civil society organizations.
The primary objective of the forum was to devise a new strategy for bolstering responses to the ongoing humanitarian challenges in Somalia, with a strong emphasis on reinforcing partnership and mutual understanding between the government and its aid partners.
The Commissioner of SoDMA, Mr. Mahmoud Moallin, emphasized the critical importance of the meeting for developing a unified approach to addressing emergency situations. He stated that the goal is to ensure aid reaches those in need efficiently, swiftly, and effectively.
During the meeting, the Deputy Minister of Finance, Mr. Abdiqafaar Elmi Hange, noted the significant increase in the country’s production, particularly in the livestock and agricultural sectors, during the past year of 2024. He highlighted this as an indication that Somalia is progressively moving towards self-reliance.
Contributing to the discussions, the Deputy Governor of Finance for the Banadir region, Mr. Isse Guure, along with Sheikh Baahiir Ahmed Salaad, the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, other religious leaders, and various officials who spoke at the meeting, collectively called for urgent assistance to the Somali population facing drought conditions.
The high-level meeting reflects the commitment of SoDMA and its partners to improve the effectiveness of humanitarian operations in Somalia. The anticipated new strategy is expected to streamline efforts and foster a more cohesive and impactful response to the various humanitarian needs across the country.
