AMSTERDAM, (SONNA) — The Federation of Somali Associations Netherlands (FSAN), the umbrella organization representing Somali communities across the country, has elected a new leadership committee to guide the organization for the next three years. The elections, held in Amsterdam on March 29, 2026,were attended by more than 20 representatives from member organizations.

Five committee members were elected, including Chairman Abdifitah Mohamed Hassan (Abdi Hooyo), whose term was renewed in recognition of the previous leadership’s strong performance. The outgoing interim committee, which had served on a temporary basis for six months, presented their achievements and the administrative improvements made during their tenure.

Speaking after his election, Chairman Abdi Hooyo outlined a vision to strengthen Somali communities across the Netherlands. “We are committed to delivering meaningful projects that uplift our community and ensure that Somalis stand out and shine among other communities. FSAN will operate with fairness, transparency, and accountability, and we will work tirelessly to create opportunities and support our people,” he said.

The newly elected committee members are: Abdifitah Mohamed Hassan (Abdi Hooyo) – Chairman; Abdikarim Mohamud – Treasurer; Osman Abukar – Deputy Chairman; Hawa Ahmed – Secretary; and Ismail Gutale – Deputy Secretary.

It is noteworthy that a number of young individuals who grew up and were educated in the Netherlands have recently joined FSAN. They are expected to contribute fresh energy, innovative ideas, and a dynamic approach to the organization’s programs. The new leadership has pledged to strengthen the capacity of member organizations and collaborate with local municipalities to deliver development projects, focusing on education, youth empowerment, social participation, and community well-being.

During the meeting, the outgoing administration also confirmed that four new organizations had applied for FSAN membership, and their applications were approved by the attending representatives.

Founded in 1994, FSAN serves as the national platform and spokesperson for the Somali community in the Netherlands. The organization promotes integration, empowerment, and social development while supporting peacebuilding and development initiatives in Somalia. FSAN has long been active in initiatives against female genital mutilation (FGM) and continues to coordinate projects across more than 50 Somali organizations nationwide.
