SoDMA Enlists Somali Islamic Scholars to Spearhead National Drought Response and Community Mobilization

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mahamoud Moallim Abdulle, convened a crucial meeting today with the leadership of the Umbrella of Somali Islamic Scholars to address the escalating drought crisis gripping the nation.

The high-level religious delegation was led by the Chairman of the Umbrella, Sheikh Adan Moallim Sugow, accompanied by Deputy Chairman Sheikh Bashir Ahmed Salad and Sheikh Mohamud Abdulbaari.

The strategic dialogue focused on leveraging the influential voice of the country’s religious leaders to mitigate the impact of the drought. The discussions centered on how the Ulama can play a more prominent role in raising public awareness, encouraging social solidarity, and mobilizing community-based humanitarian interventions.

Commissioner Mahamoud Moallim Abdulle urged the scholars to lead a national campaign of “spiritual and social mobilization.” He specifically requested that they use their platforms to encourage the Somali people to support one another during these difficult times. Furthermore, given the severity of the water shortage affecting vast areas of the country, the Commissioner called upon the scholars to organize and lead nationwide prayers for rain (Roob-doon), seeking divine intervention for the relief of the populace.

In response, Sheikh Adan Moallim Sugow affirmed the steadfast commitment of the Somali Islamic Scholars to the humanitarian cause. He stated that the religious community is prepared to exert extra effort in sensitizing the public and will work tirelessly to ensure that emergency aid reaches those in the most critical conditions.

The Chairman emphasized that Somali scholars have always stood at the forefront of rescue operations and crisis prevention, and they remain ready to collaborate closely with government institutions to save lives.
