Thousands of Class 8 Students Celebrate Completing Primary School
Jubilant scenes in Mogadishu as pupils mark the end of their national examinations and a major educational milestone.

MOGADISHU, June 18, 2026 (SONNA) — Thousands of Class 8 students filled the streets of Mogadishu this week in jubilant celebration after completing their national primary school examinations, marking the end of eight years of primary education.
Dressed in bright yellow gowns — many signed by friends and classmates with messages of congratulation and grades such as "A+" — the students waved Somali national flags, raised their phones to capture the moment, and gathered in open grounds in scenes of pride and joy.
The Grade 8 examinations mark the completion of primary school and serve as the gateway to secondary education. For the students and their families, finishing the exams represents a major achievement and a defining milestone in their academic journey.
The end-of-exams celebrations have become an annual tradition in Somalia, with pupils marking the conclusion of the school year in colourful gatherings across the capital and other cities.
The scenes reflected the growing value Somali families and communities place on education, and the determination of a young generation committed to learning and to building its future.
For many of the students, the day marked not only the close of one chapter but the beginning of another, as they prepare to advance to secondary school in the coming academic year.
Parents, teachers, and well-wishers joined in congratulating the students, expressing hope that the young learners would continue their studies and one day contribute to the development of the nation.
