The National Independent Human Rights Commission Condemns Grave Violation Against a Somali Woman

Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The National Independent Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) expresses its strongest condemnation of the assault and degrading treatment of a Somali woman in Mogadishu, whose dignity, privacy and fundamental rights were violated, and whose suffering was recorded and circulated on social media.
This alleged act constitutes a serious violation of human dignity and the rights guaranteed under the Provisional Constitution of Somalia, as well as Somalia's obligations under international human rights law. The public dissemination of images or videos depicting such abuse compounds the harm suffered by the victim and risks further traumatizing survivors of violence.
The Chairperson of the National Independent Human Rights Commission, Dr. Maryam Qasim Ahmed, said: "This appalling act is a grave violation of human dignity and the fundamental rights of the victim. No one should be subjected to such abusc, humiliation or public exposure. We call for a prompt, thorough and impartial investigation and urge the authorities to ensure that all those responsible are held accountable in accordance with the law. Justice must be served, and there can be no impunity for such violations."
NIHRC calls on law enforcement authorities to conduct a prompt, thorough and impartial investigation, identify all those responsible, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice in accordance with the law. Accountability is essential not only for the victim but also to reinforce public confidence that such abuses will not be tolerated.
The Commission urges all individuals who may have information relevant to the case to cooperate with the competent authorities. We also call on the public to refrain from sharing or reposting content that violates the dignity and privacy of the victim.
Violence against women and girls remains a grave human rights concern. Every woman has the right to live free from violence, humiliation and abuse. The protection of the dignity, safety and rights of women must remain a national priority.
NIHRC stands in solidarity with the victim and her family and reaffirms its commitment to promoting accountability, protecting human rights and advancing justice for all.
