Mogadishu (SONNA) — The National Climate Fund (NCF), in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources (MoEWR) and supported by the Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA), successfully convened the National Validation Workshop in Mogadishu for the Climate-Resilient Urban Water Security Project and the Somalia Water Investment Programme (WIP) 2026–2030.

The workshop brought together government institutions, development partners, civil society organizations, academics, and private sector representatives to endorse two key initiatives aimed at strengthening Somalia’s water security and climate resilience.

A major outcome of the meeting was the approval of the “Rainwater Harvesting and Storage Systems for Vulnerable Urban Communities in Somalia” project, valued at USD 25.8 million.

The project will be implemented in the towns of Hudur (Bakool), Garbaharey (Gedo), Mataban (Hiiraan), Dhusamareb (Galgaduud), Las Anod (Sool), and Badhan (Sanaag).

It will focus on developing rainwater harvesting and storage infrastructure, strengthening climate information and forecasting systems, and improving municipal water governance to reduce the impacts of recurring droughts and enhance access to reliable and sustainable water supplies.

Participants also endorsed the Somalia Water Investment Programme (WIP) 2026–2030, led by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, which outlines an investment pipeline estimated at USD 232 million to support priority projects in water supply, water storage, flood management, groundwater development, irrigation, sanitation, climate resilience, and institutional capacity building.

The validation workshop marks a significant milestone in advancing Somalia’s climate-resilient water investment agenda and aligns with the Water Sector Development Plan, the National Adaptation Plan (NAP), NDC 3.0, the National Transformation Plan, and the Africa Water Investment Programme (AIP).
