Somalia’s Human Rights Commission Calls for Protection of Civilians After Reported Killings

Mogadishu(SONNA)-The National Independent Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) has been alerted to a deeply concerning alleged incident reported to have occurred on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, in Digta Margoos (Kamjiroon area), Lower Juba region, where a number of reported civilians were allegedly killed by armed individuals.

Pursuant to its constitutional mandate to monitor human rights and investigate violations across the country, the Commission is actively conducting a preliminary inquiry to verify the circumstances surrounding this incident. The NIHRC is currently engaging with local authorities, community representatives, and independent observers in the region to gather accurate information.

The Commission emphasizes that the protection of civilian lives and the safeguarding of personal security are fundamental rights guaranteed by the Federal Constitution of Somalia and international human rights and humanitarian law. Security and judicial institutions must work diligently to ensure stability and protect communities from violence.

Dr. Maryan Qasim, Chairperson of the NIHRC, extends her profound condolences to the families of the victims. The Commission remains firmly committed to its oversight role in accordance with its mandate to monitor, investigate and report on the state of human rights in throughout Somalia and will continue to closely monitor developments in the area to ensure that human rights and accountability are upheld.
