Mogadishu (SONNA) — The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mahamud Moallin Abdulle, has underscored the need for a strategic shift from emergency response to long-term disaster preparedness during the opening of the Somalia Humanitarian Forum (CHF) in Mogadishu.
Welcoming delegates and participants, the commissioner emphasized the importance of moving beyond reactive measures toward sustainable solutions that prioritize disaster prevention and community resilience. He noted that Somalia continues to face recurring challenges such as droughts and floods, which severely impact livelihoods and leave millions grappling with food insecurity and malnutrition.
He highlighted key government priorities, including strengthening institutional coordination, enhancing early warning systems, preventing disasters before they occur, and reinforcing partnerships with stakeholders.
The forum has brought together representatives from the Federal Government and Federal Member States, United Nations agencies, ambassadors, donors, local and international NGOs, the private sector, civil society, academia, diaspora communities, and experts in humanitarian response and climate-related crises.
Officials say the gathering aims to align efforts and advance more resilient, forward-looking approaches to addressing Somalia’s humanitarian challenges.
