MOGADISHU (SONNA) — The Federal Government of Somalia has initiated a high-level technical workshop aimed at strengthening the country’s capacity to access international climate financing. The four-day session, which commenced on Monday in Mogadishu, focuses on the programming framework of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the validation of critical national strategies.
The event was officially inaugurated by the Executive Director of the National Climate Fund (NFC), Liban Absiye, who emphasized the importance of financial preparedness in addressing environmental challenges. The primary objective of this gathering is to validate two essential strategic documents: the Readiness Needs Assessment (RNA) and the Private Sector Engagement Strategy (PSES). These frameworks are designed to align Somalia’s national priorities with global climate funding mechanisms, ensuring that the country is positioned to secure necessary resources.
Organized by the National Designated Authority (NDA) for Somalia, the workshop operates under the umbrella of the AU-AIP Multicountry Readiness Programme in partnership with the Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA). The training, scheduled to run from February 9 to 12, represents a concerted effort to prepare Somali institutions for the rigorous requirements of securing sustainable climate investment.
A diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from government agencies, financial institutions, the private sector, and civil society, are participating in the sessions. By bringing together these actors with national and international experts, the initiative seeks to foster a collaborative environment that will accelerate the development of sustainable projects and enhance the engagement of the private sector in climate resilience efforts.
