The Commissioner of the National Agency for Refugees and Displaced Persons (NRDP), Ahmed Hussen Elmi, led a Somali delegation to the annual IGAD meeting of Ministers and agencies responsible for refugee and displacement issues. The high-level gathering brought together representatives from IGAD member states to review progress, challenges, and strategic priorities for the coming year, with a strong focus on identifying durable solutions for internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Ahead of the meeting, the NRDP presented Somalia’s Durable Solutions Plan, which highlights the country’s renewed commitment to ensuring sustainable support systems for displaced communities. Central to this plan is the Internally Displaced Persons Bill, recently passed by both Houses of Parliament, marking a significant milestone in strengthening legal protections and long-term assistance for IDPs.
The Nairobi meeting is scheduled to conclude tomorrow, after which a joint communiqué will be issued. The communiqué will outline shared priorities and guide IGAD’s regional framework for advancing durable solutions across member states.
