Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The Governor of Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Muungaab), on Saturday attended the official launch of voter card issuance in Boondheere district, where the process began smoothly and in an orderly manner.
The ceremony was led by the Chairman of the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan, and attended by the Deputy Governor for Security and Politics, civil society representatives, and hundreds of residents ready to receive their voter cards.
Governor Muungaab praised the people of Mogadishu for dedicating their time to exercising their constitutional rights, urging all eligible voters to collect their cards just as they previously turned out in large numbers for registration. He described the capital’s residents as citizens prepared for genuine state-building, “who have turned a deaf ear to political opportunists uninterested in their future.” He emphasized that every citizen has the right to choose the individual or party they believe best represents them and urged voters to differentiate between self-serving actors and leaders committed to the nation’s welfare.
He added that the JSP Party plays a central role in realizing “a dream the city has awaited for over half a century,” marking a critical step toward political stability, stronger governance, and the establishment of community-rooted local institutions.
Meanwhile, voter card distribution also officially began on Saturday in the districts of Xamar Jajab, Xamar Weyne, Shingaani, and Waaberi, where hundreds of previously registered residents turned out at designated centers. Once card issuance is completed, Mogadishu will proceed to its first one-person-one-vote local council elections in more than five decades.
