Mogadishu (SONNA) – The Parliamentary Committee on Social Services, led by Chairperson Hon. Nadra Salah Abdi, held a questioning session with the Minister of Health and Social Welfare of the Federal Government of Somalia, Dr. Ali Haji Adam.
During the session, the Committee received a detailed briefing from the Minister regarding the recent incident at the entrance of Banadir Maternity and Children’s Hospital, where a Somali mother gave birth outside the facility — a situation that deeply moved the Somali public and national leadership. The Minister confirmed that accountability measures and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The Minister also provided an overview of the hospital’s various services, which include maternal and child healthcare, general medicine, emergency response, child malnutrition treatment, and the management of HIV and cancer cases. He noted that each department is staffed with specialized medical professionals.
Highlighting existing challenges, the Minister pointed out that staff shortages relative to the high number of patients remain a key issue, often leading to delays in service delivery.
Following the session, the Committee conducted an oversight visit to Banadir Maternity and Children’s Hospital, where members toured different departments and spoke directly with patients.
Chairperson Hon. Nadra Salah Abdi expressed her appreciation to the hospital’s medical personnel for their vital service to the Somali people and pledged that the Committee will play an active role in advancing healthcare delivery and addressing the hospital’s pressing needs.
