MOGADISHU (SONNA) – Eight years after the deadliest terrorist attack in Somalia’s history, the Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mohamud Moalim Abdulle, released a press statement today paying tribute to the victims and their families. The Commissioner’s statement honored the memory of those lost in the October 14, 2017, truck bombing while also highlighting the enduring strength and resilience of the Somali people.

“On this day, we remember the victims of the catastrophic terror attack that struck Mogadishu eight years ago,” the Commissioner said. “My heart goes out to every family, every individual, whose lives were forever changed on that dark day.”

The Commissioner noted that while the attack showed “the very worst of humanity,” it also showcased “the incredible strength and resilience of our people.” He spoke about the importance of preparedness, response, and rebuilding, themes central to SoDMA’s mandate.

He praised Mogadishu as a symbol of recovery, a city that has “shown the world what it means to rise from the ashes.” The Commissioner affirmed that SoDMA will continue its tireless efforts to ensure the safety and security of the population and to build a stronger, more resilient Somalia for future generations.

The 2017 attack, which occurred at the Zoobe junction, is considered the deadliest in Somalia’s history, claiming the lives of more than 500 people and injuring hundreds more. The anniversary serves as a day of national remembrance and a call for unity against terrorism.
