MOGADISHU (SONNA) – The Federal Republic of Somalia has expressed its profound appreciation for the recent peace agreement reached in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, which aims to end the devastating two-year conflict in the Gaza Strip. The Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation issued a press statement on October 9, 2025, welcoming the deal as a major step toward a just and comprehensive resolution of the Palestinian cause.
The agreement, brokered through indirect talks between Israel and Hamas, was based on a peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. It includes several key provisions: an immediate ceasefire, a phased withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, the release of remaining hostages held by Hamas, and a major exchange of prisoners held by Israel. It also outlines the facilitation of humanitarian aid to Gaza and the resumption of political negotiations under international sponsorship.
Somalia’s statement reiterated its steadfast support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the right to establish an independent and sovereign state with Jerusalem as its capital. This principled position reflects Somalia’s longstanding commitment to international legitimacy and the values of dignity, justice, and peaceful coexistence.
