Mogadishu, (SONNA) – Dr. Adam Abdullahi Aw Hassan was elected Speaker of the North Eastern State Parliament after securing 53 votes against 29 for his rival, Abdighafar Mohamud Mohamed, in a decisive session held on Saturday.
North Eastern State is the latest to formally join Somalia’s federal member states, marking a significant step in completing the country’s legislative and executive institutions.
The election of the new speaker is expected to accelerate efforts to integrate the state’s institutions into the federal system and support the central government’s drive to strengthen constitutional and political structures.
Meanwhile, Mogadishu is preparing for the upcoming elections of the city’s mayor and Banadir Regional Council, scheduled for October 30, according to the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
Observers note that finalizing elections across the federal states, alongside the local polls in the capital, will be a key test of Somalia’s progress toward consolidating its federal democratic system and achieving greater political stability.
