Yokohama, Japan — A high-level Somali delegation, led by the Minister of Planning, Investment, and Economic Development, Mahmoud Sheikh Farah, engaged in a series of productive meetings with Japanese officials in Yokohama. The discussions, held on the sidelines of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), focused on strengthening bilateral relations, political ties, and developmental cooperation.

In a meeting with Japan’s Foreign Minister, IWAYA Takeshi, the Japanese government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Somalia’s progress, particularly in the areas of security and economic growth. The meeting underscored the deepening partnership between the two nations and their shared commitment to stability and prosperity in the Horn of Africa.

Minister Farah also met with the Vice-President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Miyazaki Katsura. Both parties agreed to fast-track ongoing development projects and explore new opportunities for collaboration. The discussions emphasized key areas of focus, including skills training for Somali youth and the development of crucial economic infrastructure. The Somali minister reiterated that job creation and sustainable development are top priorities for his government.

Additionally, the Somali delegation held a separate meeting with the Japan-AU Parliamentary Committee to discuss a range of issues, including economic partnerships, professional training programs, and community investment projects.

The series of meetings in Japan highlights Somalia’s proactive approach to engaging with international partners. By strengthening its relationships with key global players like Japan, Somalia aims to secure the support needed to achieve its national development goals, as outlined in the National Transformation Plan (NTP) and the National Vision 2060.
