JAKARTA, INDONESIA — Somalia has taken a crucial step to deepen its diplomatic and economic relations with Southeast Asian nations. The Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation,H.E Abdisalam Abdi Ali (Dhaay), met with the Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, in Jakarta to discuss enhanced cooperation. The primary focus of the high-level meeting was to strengthen collaborative relations and explore opportunities for partnerships across various sectors.

During their discussion, Minister Abdisalam Dhaay pointed out the importance for Somalia to establish an official presence within ASEAN. He explained that such a move would be instrumental in boosting Somalia’s commercial, political, and social connections with the member states of the regional bloc. The minister highlighted the shared interests and potential for mutual growth, particularly in areas like trade and education.

In his response, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn warmly received Somalia’s initiative, expressing ASEAN’s readiness to forge stronger bilateral cooperation. He acknowledged Somalia’s strategic importance and affirmed that this positioning should be leveraged for the collective benefit of both sides.

This meeting is part of a broader diplomatic effort by the Somali government to reinforce its international relations, particularly with regions that hold strategic importance for economic and educational development. The engagement with ASEAN signals Somalia’s proactive approach to expanding its global network and securing new avenues for national progress.
