Abuja, Nigeria – The Somali Data Protection Authority (DPA) and the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have formalized a partnership aimed at bolstering data protection and digital privacy across both nations. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was officially signed in Abuja, marking a significant step towards enhanced regional cooperation in addressing the growing challenges of data security and personal information protection.

The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration between the two institutions, focusing on improving data protection systems, increasing public awareness about data privacy rights, and building the capacity of data protection agencies in Somalia and Nigeria.

Mr. Mohamed Nur Ali, the Director General of the Somali DPA, and Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the Director General of the Nigerian NDPC, jointly signed the MoU. This partnership underscores a shared commitment to finding common strategies and solutions to tackle the evolving landscape of data protection and privacy in the digital age.

The cooperation outlined in the MoU will facilitate the establishment of formal channels for training programs, workshops, and knowledge-sharing initiatives. These activities are designed to enhance the expertise and skills of staff within both data protection agencies. Ultimately, this collaborative effort aims to improve the ability of both nations to effectively combat data breaches and strengthen the protection of their citizens’ personal data.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Mohamed Nur Ali, Director General of the Somali DPA, emphasized the critical role of strong collaboration among data protection authorities across Africa. He highlighted the need to collectively strengthen legal frameworks, technical capabilities, and public awareness campaigns to ensure robust data protection practices continent-wide.

This partnership between Somalia and Nigeria signals a proactive approach to safeguarding digital rights and underscores the increasing importance placed on data protection in the African region. It is anticipated that this collaboration will pave the way for a more secure digital environment for citizens in both countries.
