Somali Forces Thwart Al-Shabaab Attack in Lower Shabelle, Inflicting Heavy Losses

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Somali National Army (SNA), supported by Ugandan forces from the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), successfully repelled a significant Al-Shabaab assault on the villages of Sabiib and Anoole in the Lower Shabelle region. The dawn attack, launched at approximately 6:20 AM local time on Thursday, July 25, 2025, was met with swift and courageous action by the vigilant national forces.

The national army, maintaining a high state of readiness and alertness, rapidly countered the Al-Shabaab offensive, frustrating the extremist group’s attempt to breach the villages. Intense clashes ensued, culminating in a decisive victory for the joint forces. During the confrontation, 18 Al-Shabaab militants were killed, and ongoing operations are actively pursuing the remaining remnants of the group.

Tragically, the fierce engagement claimed the lives of four SNA soldiers, while seven others sustained minor injuries. Those injured received immediate and comprehensive medical attention.

The Ministry of Defense has unequivocally praised the bravery and steadfastness of the Somali National Army, who fearlessly defended the civilian population and successfully shattered the enemy’s attack. The Ministry also extended its commendation to Somalia’s international partners for their crucial aerial support, which inflicted considerable damage on the Khawaarij group.

Reaffirming its commitment, the Federal Government of Somalia reiterated its determination to eradicate terrorism, ensure the security of the entire nation, and enable the Somali people to live in peace and dignity. This latest victory in Lower Shabelle serves as a stark reminder of the continuous efforts by Somali forces and their allies to stabilize the nation and dismantle extremist networks.
