Istanbul, Türkiye – A high-level delegation from the Somali National Army, spearheaded by Brigadier General Sahal Abdullahi Omar, the esteemed Commander of the Somali Infantry, is currently making its presence felt at the prestigious Military Technology Exhibition in Istanbul, Türkiye. This significant participation marks a strategic and forward-looking move for Somalia as it intensifies its drive to modernize its defense capabilities and cultivate stronger international military cooperation.

The exhibition, formally known as IDEF (International Defence Industry Fair), is recognized globally as a premier platform for showcasing cutting-edge defense and military technology. It commenced on July 22, 2025, and is expected to run for six days, drawing an impressive assembly of military leaders, experts, and industry representatives from numerous countries worldwide. Brigadier General Omar’s presence, alongside other senior Somali military officers, offers an invaluable opportunity to explore the very latest in military innovations, observe advancements in defense systems, and engage directly with leading manufacturers and strategic thinkers in the global defense sector.

Somalia’s proactive involvement in an event of this magnitude reflects its sharpened focus on the comprehensive rebuilding and strengthening of its armed forces to effectively address persistent internal security challenges and for Somalia’s growing contribution to regional stability. The exposure to a diverse array of military technologies – spanning advanced weaponry, sophisticated surveillance systems, efficient logistical solutions, and modern training methodologies – is poised to provide critical insights that will inform Somalia’s long-term defense procurement and strategic development.

Discussions at the exhibition are anticipated to encompass various avenues for potential collaborations, technology transfer, and training opportunities. Such partnerships are vital for further enhancing the operational readiness and tactical capabilities of the Somali Infantry. Türkiye, a consistent and robust partner in Somalia’s security sector reform, has historically provided extensive training and support for various Somali military units. This visit serves to build upon that strong existing relationship, opening new chapters for strategic partnerships in defense technology and expertise, solidifying a collaborative path towards shared security objectives.

The Commander’s participation highlights Somalia’s determined approach to integrating modern military solutions into its national security framework. It emphasizes the nation’s steadfast resolve to equip its forces with the essential tools and knowledge required to safeguard its sovereignty and ensure the protection and well-being of its citizens. The insights and connections forged at the Istanbul exhibition are poised to contribute substantially to Somalia’s ongoing journey of security sector transformation and its broader pursuit of national resilience and peace.
