Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamud attended a high-level ceremony held at the Office of the Prime Minister to mark the 65th anniversary of Somalia’s Independence and National Unity Day. The event, organized under the auspices of the Prime Minister’s Office, brought together key national leaders, senior government officials, and representatives from across Somali society.

Also in attendance were Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, Speaker of the House of the People, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madobe) and Speaker of the Upper House, Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, along with cabinet ministers, security commanders, traditional elders, civil society leaders, and youth representatives.

The ceremony highlighted Somalia’s historic journey since gaining independence on July 1, 1960, and the subsequent unification of the northern and southern regions into the Somali Republic.

In his address, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre reflected on the resilience of the Somali people over the past six and a half decades, praising the sacrifices of the country’s forefathers and underscoring the government’s commitment to rebuilding a strong, united, and federal Somali state.

Speakers from both chambers of Parliament used the occasion to call for greater national cohesion and legislative reforms to deepen federalism and support inclusive governance.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s presence at the ceremony added symbolic weight to the occasion, underscoring the importance of collective leadership at a time when Somalia is undergoing key political, security, and economic transformations.

The event concluded with cultural performances, prayers for national unity, and a call to renew efforts toward peace, stability, and prosperity for all Somalis.
