Somalia celebrates independence day in Beijing with a showcase of heritage and diplomacy

Beijing (SONNA):- The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia in Beijing hosted an exceptional celebration to mark the 65th anniversary of Somalia’s independence, in what was hailed as a symbolic and diplomatic milestone in the deepening of Somalia-China relations.

Held for the first time on the Embassy’s premises, the event brought together an esteemed gathering of ambassadors, senior Chinese government officials, diplomats, scholars, business leaders, and members of the Somali diaspora. 

The turnout was not only a reflection of Somalia’s growing presence on the international stage, but also a testament to the enduring partnership and mutual respect between Somalia and China.

Guests were welcomed with a compelling exhibition of historical photographs illustrating Somalia’s struggle for independence, resilience, and ongoing transformation. Traditional Somali cultural performances and displays captivated the audience, while documentary videos highlighted the country’s natural beauty, creativity of its people, and the strides being made in development and governance.

In her keynote address, The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia to China, H.E Hodan Osman Abdi, emphasized the profound significance of July 1st for Somalis everywhere. “This day is a reminder of our nation’s resilience and the sacrifices of those who came before us. It is also a moment to renew our commitment to building a peaceful, inclusive, and forward-looking Somalia,” she said.

Dr. Hodan also underscored the importance of Somalia’s strategic partnership with China, praising China’s longstanding support and cooperation across development, education, and infrastructure.

H.E. Ambassador Xue Bing, China’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, also delivered a heartfelt speech in which he praised Somalia’s progress towards stability and development. He reaffirmed China’s readiness to work closely with Somalia to advance peace and prosperity in the Horn of Africa. 

Ambassador Xue also referenced a congratulatory message from President Xi Jinping to Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, expressing China’s continued support for Somalia’s sovereignty and national development efforts.

The cultural segment of the event featured energetic performances by Somali students, showcasing traditional dances that reflected the rich heritage and pride of the Somali people. Chinese students also participated, impressing the audience with traditional martial arts performances, which highlighted the shared value both nations place on cultural expression and exchange.

The Embassy expressed its deep appreciation to the Somali students, embassy staff, and volunteers whose dedication and teamwork ensured the event’s resounding success. Their efforts not only brought the Somali community together but also strengthened its image as a vibrant, united, and forward-looking diaspora.

Beyond the ceremonial elements, the event stood as a powerful statement of diplomatic engagement. It highlighted Somalia’s re-emergence as a confident and collaborative player on the global stage and underscored China’s pivotal role as a development partner committed to African progress.

As Somalia continues to work toward lasting peace and sustainable development, its partnership with China remains a key pillar in its foreign policy. The celebration in Beijing was more than a national day, it was a reaffirmation of shared values, aspirations, and a mutual vision for a more interconnected and equitable world.
