ANKARA, Turkey – The National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) of Somalia recently concluded a significant visit to Ankara, where its delegation engaged in comprehensive discussions with the Supreme Election Council of Turkey. The high-level meeting focused on strengthening Somalia’s electoral infrastructure and drawing valuable lessons from Turkey’s established democratic processes.

During the productive exchange, representatives from both electoral bodies delved into detailed discussions concerning their respective organizational structures and operational frameworks. A key area of focus was the intricate process of voter registration, a critical component for ensuring credible and inclusive elections. The Somali delegation was particularly keen to understand Turkey’s successful methodology for enabling its large diaspora population to participate effectively in national elections, a model that could offer significant insights for future Somali polls.

A pivotal outcome of the discussions was a mutual agreement on robust collaboration between the two commissions. Turkey has committed to providing substantial support to Somalia’s NIEC, including technological assistance and specialized training programs designed to enhance the capabilities and expertise of Somali electoral personnel. This technical cooperation is expected to play a crucial role in modernizing Somalia’s election management systems and bolstering the overall integrity of its electoral processes.

In addition to their engagements with the Supreme Election Council, the Somali commission also held important meetings with key officials from the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These included the Director-General of the Ministry and the Director of the Africa Department. During these sessions, the Somali delegation received comprehensive briefings on various aspects of voter registration strategies and Turkey’s overarching election planning mechanisms.

This visit to Turkey signifies a strategic move by Somalia’s National Independent Electoral Commission to leverage international expertise in its ongoing efforts to prepare for forthcoming elections. The collaboration with Turkey’s Supreme Election Council is anticipated to be instrumental in building a more robust, transparent, and inclusive electoral system in Somalia, ultimately contributing to the nation’s democratic development.
