Mogadishu, SONNA – The Ministry of Defense of the Federal Republic of Somalia has launched a three-month meeting focused on safeguarding children affected by conflict. The high-level gathering, opened by the State Minister of Defense, Mr. Omar Ali Abdi, brought together key stakeholders to address the urgent need to protect Somali children from the devastating impacts of war.

The meeting was attended by senior officials, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, the Director General of the Ministry of Family and Human Rights, the Director General of the Ministry of Security, and the Director General of the Ministry of Defense. Also present were representatives from the United Nations, including the UNTSOM Commissioner for the Protection of Children and Human Rights, as well as child rights advocates and officials working on children’s rights issues.

During the opening session, State Minister Omar Ali Abdi emphasized the importance of the meeting, stating, “The protection of our children is a moral and national responsibility. We must work together to ensure their safety and reduce the harm they endure during times of conflict.”

The three-month-long meeting aims to develop comprehensive strategies to protect Somali children from the effects of war, including displacement, recruitment by armed groups, and other forms of violence. Participants will also discuss ways to strengthen legal frameworks, enhance coordination among government agencies, and collaborate with international partners to uphold children’s rights.

The Director General of the Ministry of Family and Human Rights highlighted the need for a unified approach, stating, “This meeting is a critical step toward creating a safer environment for our children. By working together, we can ensure that their rights are protected and their futures are secured.”

The UNTSOM Commissioner for the Protection of Children and Human Rights praised the Somali government’s commitment to addressing this pressing issue, noting that protecting children in conflict zones is essential for building a peaceful and prosperous society.

This initiative reflects the Somali government’s ongoing efforts to prioritize the well-being of its youngest citizens and aligns with international commitments to protect children in armed conflict. As the meeting progresses, stakeholders are expected to produce actionable recommendations that will guide policies and programs aimed at safeguarding Somali children.

The Ministry of Defense’s leadership in organizing this meeting shows the importance of a collaborative approach to addressing the challenges faced by children in conflict-affected areas, offering hope for a brighter and more secure future for Somalia’s youth.
