Mogadishu (SONNA) – December 1, 2024: The Deputy Commissioner of the Somali National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Dr. Ahmed Abdi Adan, inaugurated a comprehensive training program on disaster preparedness and response today at the NEOC National Headquarters. This crucial initiative, facilitated by SoDMA in collaboration with Qatar Charity, marks an important step in strengthening Somalia’s resilience against natural and man-made disasters.

The training program is designed to impart foundational knowledge on emergency preparedness and response, aligning with the international framework for disaster risk reduction. Participants will be equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively manage and mitigate disaster risks, ensuring a more coordinated and robust response to emergencies.

One of the primary objectives of this seminar is to bolster the capacity of SoDMA staff across various departments. By enhancing their understanding of disaster preparedness and response mechanisms, the agency aims to build a more resilient and responsive team capable of tackling the myriad challenges faced by the Somali people.

The training program is evidence to the collaborative efforts between SoDMA and Qatar Charity. Members of Qatar Charity’s Somalia Office are also participating in the training, highlighting the importance of joint efforts in disaster management. This partnership is expected to enhance the overall effectiveness of disaster response strategies, leveraging the expertise and resources of both organizations to achieve common goals.

Dr. Ahmed Abdi Adan, during the inauguration, emphasized the critical role of disaster preparedness in safeguarding lives and livelihoods. He noted that the training is an integral part of SoDMA’s broader strategy to strengthen the national disaster management framework. “By equipping our staff with the necessary skills and knowledge, we are building a resilient foundation that will enable us to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies, ultimately protecting our communities,” he stated.

The focus on the international framework for disaster risk reduction shows SoDMA’s commitment to adhering to global standards and best practices. By aligning its disaster management strategies with international guidelines, SoDMA aims to enhance the efficacy of its response mechanisms and foster greater cooperation with global partners.

As Somalia continues to grapple with the impacts of climate change and other disaster risks, initiatives like this training program are crucial in building a resilient nation. The collaboration between SoDMA and Qatar Charity sets a precedent for future partnerships aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness and response capabilities. This seminar is expected to yield tangible improvements in the country’s disaster management practices, ensuring a safer and more secure environment.
