Foreign Minister Fiqi Addresses Talks Between Somalia and Ethiopia in Turkey

Mogadishu, Somalia – Foreign Minister Ahmed Ma’allin Fiqi held a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation headquarters, shedding light on the ongoing talks between Somalia and Ethiopia. The discussions, which took place in Turkey, aim to address critical issues affecting the two neighboring countries.

Minister Fiqi expressed concern over recent statements made by Ethiopian government officials, who characterized the presence of Ethiopian troops in Somalia as “forced.” He emphasized that such remarks could exacerbate the existing situation and hinder progress.

In response to Ethiopia’s claim that its soldiers have shed blood defending Somalia, Minister Fiqi pointed out a painful history. He recalled that during 2007-2008, Ethiopian forces were involved in the loss of over 20,000 Somali lives, destruction of property, and the displacement of 800,000 people. However, he also acknowledged that Ethiopian troops and the general ATMIS mission had sacrificed their lives in the fight against extremist groups.

“Despite our shared sacrifices against the Khawarij,” Minister Fiqi asserted, “we must not compromise the unity of our land and sea. Our commitment extends beyond monetary value; it is a matter of national pride and sovereignty.”

The Minister commended the Turkish government’s efforts to mediate a resolution to the crisis. He expressed hope that the next round of talks would yield an outcome based on mutual respect for international law.

As tensions persist, the eyes of the international community remain fixed on these delicate negotiations, awaiting a path toward stability and cooperation in the Horn of Africa.
