Mogadishu, Somalia – The political landscape of Somalia mourns the loss of a distinguished figure as former Speaker of the Somali Federal Parliament, Prof. Mohamed Osman Jawari, passed away in Mogadishu on June 28, 2024, at the age of 79. His family and friends confirmed the sad news after an illness.

Prof. Jawari, born in the Afgoye district in the Lower Shabelle region in 1945, leaves behind a legacy of service to his nation. Although he was born in Afgoye, he was registered in the Burhakaba district in the Bay region. His educational journey led him to graduate from the Somali National University, where he specialized in Islamic Sharia and Comprehensive Law. Throughout his life, he made significant contributions to the development of several Somali constitutions, dating back to 1960.

His political career included serving as a minister in the administration of Siad Barre, whose government was the last to control the entire country before its downfall in 1991. Prof. Jawari’s expertise extended beyond politics; he was also a lawyer and worked for the United Nations. Additionally, he pursued an academic career in Norway.

Speaker Sheikh Adan Madobe expressed heartfelt condolences, emphasizing Prof. Jawari’s dedication to Somalia. “May God have mercy on Prof. Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari,” said Speaker Madobe. “He was a politician who served our nation for most of his life, contributing significantly to the reconstruction of our country and playing a major role in shaping our government.”

The Speaker of the People’s Assembly echoed these sentiments, recognizing Prof. Jawari’s elder statesmanship and historical impact. “He devoted most of his life and time to building our nation,” stated the Chairman. “His role in rewriting our country’s constitution will not be forgotten.”

As Somalia bids farewell to this remarkable leader, the Speaker of the People’s Assembly prays for Prof. Jawari’s soul to find peace in Janatul Ferdowsa. May patience and faith accompany all Somali people during this time of loss.
