Mogadishu, Somalia – June 6, 2024: The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the Chinese embassy in Mogadishu have both extended their warmest congratulations to the Federal Republic of Somalia for its election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2025-2026 term. This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone in Somalia’s diplomatic journey, showcasing its remarkable progress in governance, peace, and stability.

H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the Executive Secretary of IGAD, praised the resilience and dedication of the Somali people and their leadership, stating, “This remarkable achievement reflects the Federal Republic of Somalia’s significant strides in governance, stability, and international diplomacy. It is a testament to the resilience and dedication of the Somali people and their leadership in contributing to global peace and security.”

The Chinese embassy echoed this sentiment with a celebratory message, “Hambalyo! Hambalyo! Hambalyo! We extend our warmest congrats to Somalia on being elected non-permanent member of the #UNSC for 2025-2026. This milestone fully reflects Somalia’s remarkable progress in peace and stability. China will continue to work with Somalia for a more peaceful & prosperous world.”

Somalia’s election during the 78th session of the United Nations is particularly noteworthy as it is only the second time in 52 years that the country has secured this seat. As the sole candidate from East Africa, Somalia received unanimous support from the African Union, signifying the continent’s confidence in Somalia’s ability to represent its interests on the global stage.

Joining Somalia in this new term are Pakistan, Denmark, Greece, and Panama, who will collectively replace the outgoing non-permanent members Mozambique, Switzerland, Malta, Japan, and Ecuador. As a member of the Security Council, Somalia is poised to actively engage in addressing global challenges and promoting international peace and cooperation.

IGAD has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Somalia, emphasizing a shared commitment to regional and international peace and stability. The election of Somalia to the Security Council is not only a victory for the nation but also a beacon of hope for the entire region, symbolizing a future where Somalia’s voice and perspective will be integral in shaping the course of international politics and security.

As Somalia prepares to take on this vital role, the world watches with anticipation, ready to witness the contributions that this resurgent nation will bring to one of the most influential forums in global governance.
