Somali Parliamentarians Engage in Nuclear Science and Safety Talks at Vienna Conference

Delegates from the world’s parliaments, including Somalia’s MP Salim Aliyow Ibrow and Senator Osman Mohamud Dubbe, participated in a pivotal conference held in Vienna, Austria. The conference focused on the control and peaceful use of nuclear weapons.

The Somali representatives engaged in meaningful discussions with United Nations leaders based in Vienna. Notable figures included Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and Dr. Robert Floyd, head of nuclear test control. The assembly provided a comprehensive report on Somalia’s progress in combating corruption, finalizing its constitution, and the achievements of the 11th parliament over the past two years.

A highlight of the visit was the tour of the Siebersdorf laboratory, the world’s premier facility for the development and safe application of nuclear science. Managed by the IAEA, the laboratory represents a significant investment in the realm of human-beneficial nuclear research.

The Somali parliamentarians explored three specialized laboratories:

  1. Cancer Research and Treatment: A lab dedicated to controlling and treating cancer, particularly in its early stages. Equipment from this lab has been deployed across eight African countries, marking a milestone in disease prevention.
  2. Agricultural Advancements: This lab has revolutionized agricultural practices by reducing the growth period of certain crops from six months to two months. A testament to this success is the tripling of rice production in Thailand, as reported by the IAEA Director General.
  3. Disaster Prediction Technology: The third lab houses equipment capable of predicting seismic events, such as earthquakes and tsunamis, 10 minutes before they occur. This technology is poised to significantly enhance the safety and security of populations worldwide.

The visit shows Somalia’s commitment to leveraging nuclear science for peaceful purposes and highlights the nation’s active role in international discussions on nuclear safety and security.
