MOGADISHU, SOMALIA – In a landmark technological advancement, Hormuud Telecom, Somalia’s leading telecommunications provider, has officially launched its 5G network. The new service is now commercially available in nine major centers across the nation, marking a significant leap forward in internet connectivity for the country.

The inauguration event, held on Thursday in Mogadishu, was graced by the presence of Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, among other dignitaries. The launch of the 5G network promises to deliver faster and more reliable internet services, with the company announcing over 80% coverage capability in its initial statement.

Hormuud Telecom’s introduction of 5G is poised to have a transformative impact on the lives of many Somalis, particularly benefiting those without access to traditional banking systems. The company highlighted the importance of the 5G network for individuals who depend on mobile money services for both business transactions and personal use.

With an existing 4G network that covers 70% of the population, Hormuud Telecom is optimistic about the future. The company forecasts an increase in coverage, expecting to extend 5G services to 88% of urban dwellers and approximately 70% of rural communities within the year. This expansion is set to enhance connectivity and foster growth in various sectors across Somalia.
