Historic Day for Somalia: First Successful Open-Heart Surgery at Recep Tayyip Erdogan Hospital.

In a landmark achievement for Somalia’s healthcare, the Recep Tayyip Erdogan Hospital in Mogadishu has successfully conducted the country’s first-ever open-heart surgery. This historic event marks a significant advancement in medical capabilities within Somalia, showcasing the dedication and skill of both local and international medical professionals.

The surgery was performed on a patient who had been suffering from severe heart complications due to three blocked veins. Despite the challenges, the medical team’s expertise led to a successful operation, offering a new lease on life to the patient, who expressed a profound sense of peace following the procedure.

The operation was a collaborative effort between Turkish and Somali doctors, reflecting a decade of medical service and nearly 3 million patients treated at the hospital. The general director emphasized the importance of this day, not just for the hospital but for the entire nation, as it represents a leap forward in the medical community’s ability to provide complex healthcare services.

The heart surgeon team, led by Dr. Mahmad Kislay, along with seven other specialists and the Somali heart and vascular surgeon Dr. Abdinaaf Mohamed Hussein, exemplified international cooperation and the transfer of knowledge and skills.

The deputy director of the hospital, Mohamed Hussein Ashraf, assured that this is just the beginning of a new era in healthcare for Somalia, with more heart surgeries planned for the future, ensuring that the medical staff will continue to serve the needs of the Somali people.

This momentous occasion is a proof to the resilience and progress of Somalia’s health industry, instilling a sense of pride and hope for the future of medical care in the country.
