The Turkish Embassy in Somalia has donated $50,000 to the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) to help the victims of the recent floods caused by the El Nino rains.
The donation was handed over by the Deputy Ambassador of Turkey, Mr. Armağan Ardoğa, to the Chairman of the SoDMA, Mr. Mohamud Macalin, in a ceremony held in Mogadishu on Wednesday.
Mr. Macalin thanked the Turkish government and people for their generous and continuous support to the Somali people, especially in times of crisis. He said the donation would be used to provide food, water, shelter, and medical assistance to the affected communities.
Mr. Ardoğa said Turkey was committed to standing by Somalia in its efforts to overcome the challenges of natural disasters, insecurity, and poverty. He said Turkey had been providing humanitarian and development aid to Somalia since 2011, and would continue to do so in the future.
According to the SoDMA, the floods have displaced more than 600,000 people and affected more than two million people across the country. The agency has appealed for more support from the international community to address the urgent needs of the flood victims.
