Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamud presided over the second session of the National Consultative Council on Security held today in the capital city of Mogadishu. The meeting centred on assessing the progress of the second phase of operations aimed at countering the threat posed by the notorious extremist group, Al-Shabaab.

During the session, key government officials and representatives from the regional member states were briefed on the current status of the ongoing operation. The Minister of Defence, Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur, along with the Commander of the Somali National Army, provided detailed updates on recent developments in the fight against Al-Shabaab. Additionally, they presented a comprehensive report prepared by General Mohamed Ali Barise, Chief of the Somali Army, who is leading the joint military offensive against Al-Shabaab in collaboration with international partners.

The Chief of Defense Forces, General Yusuf Rage Odowa, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the achievements made in the relentless battle against the extremist group. General Odowa outlined the progress made, the challenges encountered, and the strategic plan devised for liberating the targeted areas in the second phase of the operation. These areas include the regions of South West State and Jubaland.

President Mohamud underscored the critical juncture Somalia finds itself in, emphasizing the imperative of unity and collaboration between the Somali people and leadership to attain stability, progress, and security. He emphasised the ultimate goal of ensuring the citizens’ well-being by eliminating the menace of extremist elements such as Al-Shabaab, enabling them to lead peaceful and prosperous lives.

Both the Federal Government and the Regional Administrations expressed their appreciation for the efforts of the Somali National Army in securing various regions and districts within Hirshabelle and Galmudug. They commended the significant contributions made by the security forces in restoring peace and stability to areas previously plagued by the presence of Al-Shabaab.

The National Consultative Council on Security serves as a vital platform for strategic discussions and collaborative decision-making to address the security challenges faced by Somalia. By bringing together key stakeholders, including government officials and representatives from the regional member states, the council aims to foster synergy and cooperation in the fight against terrorism and the restoration of peace throughout the country.

As Somalia continues to navigate this critical phase, the government remains committed to ensuring the safety and prosperity of its people. The concerted efforts of both the Federal Government and the Regional Administrations, as well as the dedication of the Somali National Army, are crucial in overcoming the threat of Al-Shabaab and establishing lasting peace and stability across the nation.
