Mogadishu(SONNA)-Somalia on Saturday marked the 61st Anniversary of the Independence Day in the country and overseas, SONNA reported.
Colorful event of this historic day was held at Vila Somalia, in attendance with President Mohamed Abdulahi Farmajo, Prime Minister, Mohamed Hussein Roble, Deputy Parliament Speaker, Abdiweli Hussein Mudey, Mogadishu mayor, Omar Mohamud Filish and other dignitaries including government ministers overnight.
President Farmajo delivered a key speech at occasion and called Somalia for unity, noting that division often causes poverty, hunger and without development.
“ Northern regions of Somalia had a leading role for the struggles of freedom movement and unity”, President Farmajo said.
President urged the youth to take their role in the unity among Somali population which is said to be over 20 million at moment.
Prime minister, Mohamed Hussein Roble sent congratulatory message to the Somali people on the 61st Anniversary of the Independence Day.
Somalia is now in week of Independence because northern regions of Somalia(Somaliland) gained the independence from the British colony of June 26, 1960 while southern regions got independence on July 1st the same year and joined together then built Republic of Somalia.
