Voter Registration Expands to Six More Districts in Banaadir as Somalia Prepares for Historic Elections

Mogadishu, Somalia – Voter registration has simultaneously kicked off in six additional districts in the Banaadir region, marking a significant step forward in Somalia’s preparations for its first-ever one-person, one-vote elections in 56 years. The National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEBC) has been working tirelessly to ensure a smooth and inclusive process, having already registered voters in seven other districts in recent days.

The newly added districts—Howlwadaag, Warta Nabada, Yaqshid, Hodan, Heliwaa, and Karaan—saw enthusiastic participation from residents, with long queues forming early in the morning before registration centers opened. District officials praised the high turnout and urged all eligible voters to take part in this historic exercise.

For the first time in decades, Somalis will directly elect their leaders through a democratic voting system, moving away from the previous clan-based indirect elections. The federal parliament recently approved the shift to a one-person, one-vote model, a move hailed as a major milestone in the country’s political progress.

Deputy Minister, who registered at the Karaan district center, emphasized the importance of citizen participation. “It is my right to elect and be elected, and that’s why I am here this early in the morning,” he said. “This is a constitutional right for every Somali. The next government must reflect the will of the people.”

On-the-ground reporters spoke to citizens at various registration centers, where many expressed joy and pride in being part of this historic moment.

“I feel included and happy to have a say in who leads our country,” said Halima Ahmed, a resident of Hodan district. Others called on fellow Somalis who have not yet registered to come forward and exercise their democratic right.

With general elections approaching, the NIEBC is working to ensure all eligible voters are registered in time. The expansion to additional districts aims to accelerate the process and maximize participation.

As Somalia moves closer to this groundbreaking election, the overwhelming public response signals a strong desire for democratic governance and a brighter political future.

Stay tuned for more updates as voter registration continues across Banaadir region.
