Mogadishu(SONNA)-On behalf of the Government of the United States of America, Ambassador Donald Yamamoto and the Embassy congratulate the Somali people on 60 years of independence on July 1.

It is important to recall our strong partnership as we reflect on the past 60 years, when Somalia has made significant progress but also endured incredible difficulties.  Despite the challenges, our shared values bring us closer together.  We are committed to working with all of Somalia’s people and leaders to build a hopeful future for Somalia through dialogue, cooperation, and unity of purpose.  We continue our close cooperation on governance, economic, and security reforms so that future generations of Somalis will enjoy enduring peace and prosperity.

Prime Minister Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke laid the foundation for our shared values and collaboration during his first official visit to Washington D.C. in 1962, and that spirit of partnership reverberates until today.  To all Somalis, happy 60th anniversary of independence.
