Sudan’s Hemedti visits Djibouti amid ceasefire efforts

Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, AKA “Hemedti,” continues his diplomatic tour, with Djibouti being the latest stop on his first international journey since the conflict erupted between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese army in mid-April.

The regional tours, including Ethiopia, Uganda, and Djibouti coincides with diplomatic efforts to arrange a meeting between Hemedti and his rival, Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

The warring generals, responsible for a conflict that has claimed over 12,000 lives, according to conservative estimates, and displaced millions, have not met face-to-face since the outbreak of hostilities.

Djibouti’s President, speaking on the X platform, stated, “Today I met with Lieutenant General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, Commander of the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan. We come together as brothers at this crucial moment. An affirmation of complete solidarity with the people of Sudan. IGAD mediation efforts continue for peace and stability in the region. May God protect Sudan and inspire us with peace and sustainable cooperation.”

Hemedti, addressing the latest developments in Sudan during discussions with President Guelleh, expressed a vision for peace and democracy. He outlined his unwavering commitment to ending the conflict and achieving a substantive solution. Hemedti reiterated dedication to the outcomes of the 41st Extraordinary Assembly of the IGAD Heads of State and Government, emphasizing readiness to participate in negotiations for a swift, just, and comprehensive peace in Sudan.
