SNA Commander Signs Order to Prevent and Address Conflict-Related Violence Against Women

Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Commander of the Somali National Army, Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud, on September 20 signed an order on the prevention and response to violence against women during times of conflict.

The order strengthens efforts to prevent violence against women, particularly during periods of conflict, while reinforcing the protection of women’s rights, dignity and safety. It also sets out clear responsibilities for preventing, reporting, investigating and responding to cases of violence against women in accordance with national laws and relevant international standards on the protection of civilians during armed conflict.

The signing of the order followed continued cooperation and efforts by the Human Rights and Protection Team of UNTMIS and the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, who have worked with the Somali National Army to strengthen the prevention of and response to violence against women during conflicts.
