Somalia’s Council of Ministers Passes Bills to Regulate Mining and Employment

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Council of Ministers of the Federal Republic of Somalia, during its weekly meeting, has given its approval to two key pieces of legislation: the Private Employment Agencies Regulatory Framework and the Mining Bill. This move is a significant step towards bolstering the nation’s economy and creating employment opportunities for Somali youth.

The meeting, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama, who is also the Acting Prime Minister, focused on the potential impact of these new laws. The Private Employment Agencies Regulatory Framework is designed to create a structured environment for private employment agencies, ensuring the protection of workers’ rights and encouraging the creation of more job opportunities, particularly for young Somalis. The new regulations will bring clarity and oversight to a sector that has been largely unregulated, providing a safer and more transparent labor market for all.

Furthermore, the approval of the Mining Bill is set to establish a clear and comprehensive legal framework for the exploration, extraction, and export of Somalia’s natural mineral resources. This legislation is a crucial step in managing the country’s wealth responsibly, ensuring that the benefits of its mineral resources are harnessed in a way that serves the interests of the nation and its people. By providing legal clarity, the government aims to attract foreign investment and foster sustainable economic development in the mining sector.

During the session, the cabinet also discussed the country’s security situation and the ongoing military operations against extremist groups. The government praised the Somali National Army for the significant victories they have achieved in the fight against al-Shabaab in several regions of the country, highlighting the government’s unwavering commitment to both economic development and national security.

The cabinet’s decision to approve these two bills, while also focusing on security, reflects a dual strategy to build a stable and prosperous future for Somalia. The government has affirmed that these legislative actions are part of a broader series of measures aimed at strengthening governance and achieving long-term development.
