Mogadishu, SONNA – The Council of Ministers of the Federal Republic of Somalia convened today for its regular weekly meeting, during which it discussed critical national issues, including ongoing military operations against extremist groups and progress in the country’s oil exploration initiatives.

At the forefront of discussions was the ongoing campaign to eradicate Khawarij groups from various regions of the country. A detailed report on the status of these operations was presented to the council, highlighting the significant strides made by the Somali National Army (SNA) and regional forces in combating terrorism.

The council commended the bravery and sacrifices of the soldiers and local fighters on the frontlines, emphasizing their important role in safeguarding the nation. In a statement, the council showed the importance of continued visits to battlefields to boost morale and provide direct support to those engaged in the fight against extremism.

Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre, who presided over the meeting, shared insights from his recent visit to the Lower Shabelle region on Sunday. He reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to supporting the National Army and urged the council to ensure sustained backing for military efforts across all affected areas.

Shifting focus to economic matters, the Ministry of Petroleum and Minerals updated the council on progress in oil exploration. Officials stated that the 3D Seismic Survey is expected to be completed before the end of the year, marking a significant step toward determining Somalia’s oil reserves and progressing to the next phase of drilling.

The development marks a significant milestone for Somalia as it seeks to harness its natural resources to drive economic growth and recovery following decades of conflict. However, the ministry also acknowledged challenges encountered during the exploration process and assured stakeholders that solutions are being implemented to address them effectively.

The council meeting concluded with the approval of a proposal by the Ministry of Planning and Investment Promotion to renew the tenure of Mr. Abdirahman Omar Dahir as Deputy Director of the National Statistics Agency. His appointment has been extended for a fixed term, reflecting the government’s confidence in his leadership and expertise in managing statistical data vital for policy-making and national planning.
