Somalia’s Attorney General Attends East African Prosecutors Association (EAAP) Meeting in Uganda

Mogadishu, (SONNA)-: The Somali Attorney General, Suleyman Mohamed Mohamud, on Monday participated in the 10th annual meeting of the East African Prosecutors Association (EAAP) in Kampala, Uganda. Along with other representatives from 11 countries in the region, he was involved in a meeting that aimed to explore potential avenues for better cooperation in criminal justice.

In a Facebook post, Dr. Suleyman Mohamed shared his experience of attending the 10th meeting of the East African Regional Prosecutor’s Association in Uganda: “I am honored to be part of this esteemed group that Somalia will soon join. For five days, we will exchange ideas and strategies on how to combat cross-border crimes that victimize women and children, who deserve our protection and justice.”

He also highlighted his efforts to prevent crimes against children and youth in Somalia. He continued: “As the Attorney General of Somalia, I have dedicated myself to preventing crimes against children and youth, who are our hope and pride. My office has been vigilant in prosecuting gender-based violence cases such as rape, murder, exploitation and trafficking. These atrocious crimes threaten our country’s security and stability.”

The EAAP is an organization of national prosecution authorities that was established in 2010 by the founding members of EAC (East African Community), namely Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.

The annual meeting is intended to provide an opportunity for members to learn from each other’s experiences and to share best practices in criminal justice; it also explores ways to improve the criminal justice system, ensuring that it is fair and efficient for all citizens and that countries in the region are able to cooperate and collaborate effectively in combating crime.

This is in line with Somalia’s efforts to join the East African Community as a member state. It is noteworthy that the Somali people have major businesses in the countries of the East African Community, such as Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As the easternmost country of Africa located on the Horn of Africa, Somalia’s integration into the EAC would undoubtedly bring mutual benefits to both the Somali and East African people, promising to foster growth, cooperation, and prosperity.
