Mogadishu, SONNA – The Government of Somalia has welcomed a resolution passed today by the United Nations Security Council, approving a transition of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) into a transitional mission for the next two years.
The UN Security Council supported Somalia’s proposal to transform UNSOM, the UN’s National Political Mission in Somalia, into a transitional operation effective November 1, under the new designation “United Nations Transitional Mission in Somalia” (UNTMIS).
In a show of unity, all members of the Security Council endorsed the resolution, which stipulates that the Federal Government of Somalia will assume responsibility for UNSOM’s current functions over the two-year transition period, supported by various UN agencies operating in the country.
This proposal, submitted by Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in August, was the outcome of extensive negotiations over recent months between the Federal Government of Somalia and UNSOM, facilitated by a joint technical committee. The resolution was forwarded to UN Secretary-General António Guterres following these consultations.
The successful transition is being celebrated as a significant diplomatic achievement for Somalia, marking an important step toward greater self-governance and sovereignty over its national political and security affairs.
