Mogadishu, SONNA — The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs of the Federal Government of Somalia today held a well-organized event in Mogadishu to commemorate International Workers’ Day, emphasizing the vital role of workers in the country’s development.
Although the global observance falls on May 1, this year’s national event was officially held on May 2, 2026. The commemoration was guided by the theme: “Empowering the Somali workforce through decent work and skills development.”
The event brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including directors from government ministries, representatives of the private sector, labor unions, and members of the Somali Chamber of Commerce. Participants reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening the labor market and enhancing the skills and productivity of Somali workers.
Speaking at the event, the Director General of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, Mohamed Saney Dalmar, highlighted the importance of collaboration among key actors.
Strong collaboration between the government, the private sector, and labor unions is essential to ensuring fair and equitable employment, while advancing the skills and productivity of our workforce,” he said.
He stressed that coordinated efforts are critical to building a resilient labor market capable of generating sustainable job opportunities and supporting inclusive economic growth.
The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs concluded the event by extending its congratulations to Somali workers across the country and abroad, encouraging them to continue contributing to national development and to support ongoing initiatives aimed at expanding employment and strengthening workforce capacity.
