Somalia Launches National Campaign to Combat Cancer

Mogadishu, Somalia – February 19, 2025 – The Minister of Health and Social Welfare of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Dr. Ali Haji Adam, officially inaugurated a nationwide campaign aimed at addressing the growing challenge of cancer in Somalia.

The high-profile event was attended by the State Minister of Health, Dr. Maryama Mohamed Hussein, alongside Members of Parliament from both houses of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, ambassadors, and representatives of international health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), King Salman Foundation, Qatar Charity, and TİKA. Also present were directors and staff of the Ministry of Health, medical experts, and other distinguished guests.

The forum, organized by the Ministry of Health’s Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Program, provided a platform to assess the current state of cancer in Somalia and explore strategies to combat its rising prevalence. Experts highlighted that cancer is a significant public health challenge in the country, with an increasing number of cases reported each year.

During the event, studies were presented outlining the various stages of the disease across the country. Health professionals and experts emphasized the urgency of taking decisive action, stressing that now is the time to strengthen cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment efforts in Somalia.

The campaign marks a crucial step in the government’s commitment to addressing non-communicable diseases and improving healthcare services for Somali citizens.
