Somalia Joins Global Network to Combat Multidimensional Poverty

Mogadishu, SONNA – Somalia has officially joined the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN), marking a significant advancement in the country’s efforts to address poverty through a more comprehensive lens. This membership comes as the National Bureau of Statistics develops its pilot Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), aligning Somalia with a global community committed to a holistic approach in measuring and combating poverty.

The Global MPI, established in 2010 by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative and the United Nations Development Programme, offers a deeper understanding of poverty by going beyond mere income measurements. It utilizes a set of indicators across health, education, and living standards, providing a more nuanced and multidimensional perspective on the challenges faced by impoverished communities.

Somalia’s inclusion in the MPPN signals the country’s dedication to tackling poverty on multiple fronts, fostering international collaboration, and adopting best practices from across the globe. This move is expected to enhance the effectiveness of Somalia’s poverty reduction strategies, contributing to the broader global effort to achieve sustainable development and improve living conditions for all.
